We joined the Community Hub Network in November 2022 with the aim of tackling isolation and poor health through companionship, healthy eating, and community support. Our well-established pattern for the week is always evolving as new opportunities or needs arise. This has been hugely successful, attracting local people of all ages who have benefitted from a warm place to be, companionship, freshly cooked, affordable, healthy lunches (£2.00 per hot meal), and free activities. In collaboration with our local NHS surgeries, Volunteer Cornwall, Cornwall Energy Plus, Cornwall Rural Communities Charity, Age UK, St Austell College and local businesses, we provide free financial advice, energy advice, digital advice, quizzes and singalongs. Regular attendees who have been learning IT skills will soon receive refurbished laptops from a local community organisation. For those struggling to heat their homes and afford food it has proved a valuable community support which we aim to continue throughout the year. We are fortunate to have volunteers who pick up those who would otherwise be unable to come, to ensure even our most rural residents can attend.
Community hubs operating throughout Cornwall are central points that provide support and contact for their communities, places where people can come together. Collaborating with NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly and VCSE partners to assist communities during the cost-of-living crisis offering safe and warm places for people to socialise and take part in activities. They are working on a long-term plan to provide care and support through the community hub network helping to reduce increasing pressure on NHS services by providing local support to local people.
